Writing again because of Eric Dolphy

I haven’t posted anything in the past several years. Many things have happened in my life – and I can’t believe I would ever say this, but my priorities have changed – and I haven’t been listening as much. As my record shelves needed to be moved recently, I paid some attentions to my collection. One thing led to another and I have started listening to my collections (both records and tapes) again.

Today, I randomly picked up an Eric Dolphy and boy was it good. As it was not really a famous album, I probably listened to it long time ago and never revisited. But oh, yeah! The music, the performance and the sound was so damn good. It is not a Blue Note, so no cool album arts, no Alfred Lion, no Francis Wolff, no Rudy Van Gelder. I only recognized Benny Bailey from the band (whom I like quite a lot!). I think it was pretty much just Dolphy, pure Dolphy.

My copy is a Japanese record that I bought many years ago. The original label is ‘enja’ and the record was licensed and manufactured by Nippon Phonogram. The serial number is SFX-10049-50 (double album).

I’ve compared the sound with the digital copy I found in my library, which is a 16-bit/44K FLAC version. It turns out my LP is infinitely better – bass, openness, clarity, musicality, fidelity and so on. I believe this is a good example how important the master is.

I think this is going to be my new project. Pick records that don’t impress me and look for gems!

P.S. Usually I scan the album arts, but these posted images are from Google Image search so, it’s not really mine.

P.P.S. The drum solo of ‘I’ll remember April’, I have to say, is outstandingly boring~

Serendipity. That’s what I would call my story around this album. I’ve picked this one up during my visit at the Groove Yard last month. I’ve never heard of the album let alone the group and when I read the … Continue reading

Why do collectors prefer Mono records? (and the best way to play them)

When I first started listening to Jazz, I tried to avoid mono records at all cost. Having been listening to rock music for the past 30+ years, I was reminded of the thin & flat sound of the 50’s & … Continue reading

This was one of those records that I just had to own. One of my favorite Prestige albums, with prominent Coltrane before he was set free. After losing a couple of auctions, I started a long stake out, waiting for … Continue reading

Several weeks ago, I won this hard-to-find album by Tony Fruscella. I believe this 1955 recording (Tony Fruscella: Tony Fruscella, Atlantic 1220) is arguably his only record as the leader. (I actually own a Japanese copy of the ‘Tony Fruscella-Phil Woods … Continue reading
